If you need to help someone apply for Medicare, like a parent or spouse, here are some helpful tips.

It's OK to help someone apply for Medicare. A child, spouse, friend, advocate, attorney or employer are among the people who may offer assistance. You don't need to be appointed as a representative of the person to help.

What will Social Security ask of you?

If you're completing the application for someone else, Social Security may ask about:

  • You
  • Your relationship to the person you're helping
  • The organization you work for

Who can sign the application?

Each Medicare plan can only cover one person, so the person you're helping needs to sign the application. If you're not in the same place, Social Security will forward it to him or her to sign.

Where can I find help?

If you need more information about enrolling someone else, you can find out more on the Social Security website.
