Legal Notices About How We Comply With Government Information

What is this about?

These are legal notices about government information we comply with, including follow-up treatment after breast cancer surgery and the Newborns’ and Mothers’ Health Protection Act of 1996.

Follow-up treatment covered after breast cancer surgery

If you’ve had a mastectomy* as part of your breast cancer treatment, your benefits provide coverage for additional mastectomy-related services, as required by the Women’s Health and Cancer Rights Act of 1998.

The benefits include:

  • Reconstruction of the breast
  • Surgery and reconstruction of the other breast to achieve a symmetrical appearance
  • Prostheses and treatment of physical complications at all stages of the mastectomy, including lymphedema, localized fluid retention caused by a compromised lymph system.

You and your doctor decide how these services are received. Coverage for post-mastectomy services is subject to any deductibles, copayments or out-of-pocket maximums required by your plan.

For more information, call the Customer Service number of the back of your Blue Cross ID card.

*Some group health plans do not provide this coverage. Please check your benefit plan for coverage of these services.

We follow the Newborns’ and Mothers’ Health Protection Act of 1996

Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan follows the Newborns’ and Mothers’ Health Protection Act of 1996.

This act states that the lengths of hospital stays for childbirth* are at least 48 hours following a vaginal delivery and 96 hours following a cesarean section. A physician or other health provider doesn’t need to get authorization for prescribing a stay up to those lengths. However, the attending physician or certified nurse midwife, with the mother’s consent, may discharge the mother or newborn earlier.

*Some group health plans do not provide this coverage. Please check your benefit plan for coverage of these services.
